We had a cosmically wonderful time at our Young Musicians’ Summer Course this year!

The course took place at Mycenae House and was fully booked, with over twenty children aged 5-11 joining us for a week of creative music-making led by Greenwich Music School Director and pianist Bethan Scolding, together with GMS teacher and flautist Fiona Long and guest teachers Angela, Júlia, Martha and Wilf.

“My guitar piece is about a girl and she’s at a rocket station and by accident she presses the button to go off... I learnt how to strum and slide my fingers across the fretboard and a lot of other things”

A rocket-fueled space theme inspired creative work throughout the week, and each day included creative exploring, composing and improvising activities, a singing and musicianship session, instrument taster sessions, musical games and performances - as well as time enjoying the beautiful gardens!

“He was really taken with the guitar and composing songs on it - he came home and started improvising on his ukulele!”

Professional musicians gave live demonstrations of violin, piano, guitar or flute before the class tried out an instrument themselves, and even made their own unique instruments using boxes, plastic cups, tape, elastic bands and dried lentils.

“Aniya has more knowledge of music language using the correct words to describe music as a student… I hope this is on next year”

The course ended with a special concert for family and friends - we listened to singing in unison and in parts, percussion orchestra performances drawing together the week’s work on ostinato, crescendo and how to follow a conductor, and brand new melodies and compositions created by the children and performed on guitar, violin, piano, flute and chime bars.

“As a parent I appreciated the opportunity to try new things.”

Over the summer we also ran our first rock band course, family choir sessions, a four week mini-term of early years and pre-school courses for ages 0-4, and taster sessions for children and adults to try piano and ukulele.

“I feel a lot more confident now that I have finished this course”

“I enjoy it a lot, I have got useful tips from this course that will help me to make music in the future”
