Music Theory

Learn music theory through activities, musical examples and listening. We’ll build an understanding of music theory principles and how they relate to the music we hear and play. Progress through workbooks and take theory exams up to grade 5 level.

The term fee is discounted by 40% for one to one students at GMS.

Learn music theory through activities, musical examples and listening. We’ll build an understanding of music theory principles and how they relate to the music we hear and play. Progress through workbooks and take theory exams up to grade 5 level. 

Students develop music literacy and theoretical knowledge:

  • Understand harmony, melody and counterpoint and how to apply them in composition
  • Develop composition skills and hear work performed
  • Ideal support for GCSE music
  • Preparation for ABRSM theory exams up to grade 5 (entry optional)

Students will need to bring their own manuscript paper, pencil and eraser, and buy a workbook (we’ll recommend which one is suitable). We recommend:

  • for students working on grade 1 or 2: Novello Manuscript Book 1, A5 landscape, 4 staves per page, 32 pages (Amazon / Musicroom)
  • for students working on grades 3, 4 or 5: Hal Leonard Manuscript Paper, Standard Wire-bound, A4 portrait, 12 staff 96 pages (Amazon / Book Depository)
