Suitable for those who have been learning an instrument for around 2 years or more.

This is a mixed-level class for those learning an instrument to get support and guidance on all areas of music theory up to Grade 5 level.

During each class students will be working through activities suitable for their level, and where appropriate the whole group may join for musical examples, activities and listening.

This class provides excellent preparation for ABRSM or Trinity theory exams up to grade 5. A minimum of two terms (around 6-8 months) is recommended for each grade. Longer than this may allow more comprehensive understanding and creative use of theory areas.

Students will need to bring their own workbook (we recommend the 'Discovering Music Theory' series), as well as a pencil, eraser and manuscript paper - we recommend:

  • for students working on grade 1 or 2: Novello Manuscript Book 1, A5 landscape, 4 staves per page, 32 pages (Amazon / Musicroom)
  • for students working on grades 3, 4 or 5: Hal Leonard Manuscript Paper, Standard Wire-bound, A4 portrait, 12 staff 96 pages (Amazon / Book Depository)
