Michael Iskas


Michael is a violin and viola performer and teacher.

He has performed with a number of orchestras such as Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, English National Ballet, Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra et al. He also performs with several chamber music ensembles and as a soloist.

Michael is an enthusiastic and experienced violin and viola teacher for all ages and levels working for several years in music schools, primary schools and music services in the UK and Greece. His teaching philosophy is that knowledge should be given to the student in an interesting and creative way as he considers important that someone should love the subject he is learning and enjoy it throughout the whole process. In this way learning becomes much easier and effective. He includes in his lessons a lot of activities training the student in various aspects giving a well-rounded musical education.

Michael is co-founder of Diphonon Duo (Viola-Accordion) along with the Spanish accordionist Iñigo Mikeleiz Berrade. They have appeared in many venues in England and abroad such as Wigmore Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Royal Academy of Music, St James Piccadilly, Colston Hall (Bristol). A number of composers have written pieces for Diphonon Duo as it is an unusual and challenging combination of instruments.

They have been fellows of the Wigmore Hall Learning Department performing in a lot of concerts and participating in children workshops, comunity music projects with hospitals, SEND schools, people with dementia, homeless people. They are also Live Music Now and Concordia Foundation ensemble.

Michael has studied violin in Greece (University of Macedonia) and in Vienna (MDW) with J.Pospichal. After obtaining his BMus in violin performance and education he studied viola performance at the Royal Academy of Music with J.Sleigh getting his Master of Arts and later he continued his studies on the same subject at Trinity Laban with the renowned violist Roger Chase obtaining his Postgraduate Advanced Diploma. He also completed the LRAM diploma for violin and viola teaching at the Royal Academy of Music.

Among other important musicians, he has participated in masterclasses and lessons with Lawrence Power, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Garth Knox, Hartmut Rohde, Paul Silverthorne, Annette Isserlis, Richard Ireland, Tatjana Masurenko, Paul Patterson etc.

He has been Scholar of the Royal Academy of Music, Athena Scholarship, Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece.
