Composing Drama: an introduction to writing opera

Age: 13-18

Group size: 4 to 30

Experience required: Grade 3+

Duration: 2.5 hours to 1 day

Objectives: Learn about and create music for voice, expressing emotion and atmosphere

Activity: Working with a composer and a singer, students learn about word setting for stage, analysing opera and musicals then using this learning to create expressive music which communicates drama, emotion and mood. Students' work is workshopped then performed by the the singer in a plenary session.

Pianists Together

Age: 7-11 or 11-16

Group size: 4 to 12

Experience required: Grade 1+

Duration: 1/2 to 1 day, or ongoing series

Objectives: Piano students play music in duets, trios and other group sizes, introducing or developing ensemble skills

Activity: Pianists are given a rare opportunity to work as an equal member of an ensemble, with repertoire specifically written for these ensembles. The workshop develops ensemble work, boosting confidence, technique, communication and repertoire ideas to kick-start further ensemble work.

Experience required: Grade 3+

Duration: 1 to 2 days, or 5 x 1hr

Objectives: Learn about and compose music communicating drama and atmosphere for film

Activity: Compose music to transform film, intensifying action, describing characters, telling the story and creating atmosphere, mood and setting. Students study clips with music, learn tools and techniques and apply these to create their own soundtracks to provided clips.
